Website Design 2023
American writer, researcher and usability expert Jared Spool once said, "Good design, when it's done well, becomes invisible. Only when it's done well. When it's bad, we notice it." So let's take a look at five failed designs. , share how good design works and learn some lessons so we can all create better and intangible experiences.
1. Information Overload
As designers, we often find ourselves in situations where we need to pack a lot of information into a small space. Often designing mobile applications means facing same problem.
What distinguishes good design is that it puts user at center. The design also uses visuals rather than text to convey information, and results are very intuitive.
Understand what your users want and design accordingly. This helps reduce information overload. Do you need to convey a lot of information to user? Try using visuals instead of text.
2. Confusing navigation.
Poor design reduces visibility of navigation elements. This increases cognitive load on user as they now have to guess how to navigate or what to click on.
Under fold of main page is a grid of image thumbnails. Are they clickable? Yes, if you hover your mouse over image, it will turn into a pointer. But what happens when you click on an image? "Click to find out!" has never been a good user experience (UX) solution. Most likely, users will abandon navigation and find an alternative solution on a competitor's site.
The lesson is that links should be clearly marked. You can improve usability of your pages by simply adding "View Items" on mouseover.
Always tag links, users don't like to follow obscure links.
3. Increase cost of user actions
As designers, we must be extremely careful about charging user behavior costs, unless our goal is to discourage users from such behavior. However, sometimes we may even unintentionally add friction to user behavior (mostly for aesthetic or novelty reasons), resulting in a degraded user experience.
Imagine that instead of loading page immediately, you click and hold each link in your browser for two seconds. After a few taps and holds, stop browsing Internet completely.
Our designers are often fascinated by latest interaction styles or actions, but you should always be careful when your design may affect user behavior.vatel.
The lesson here is: avoid additional user behavior costs whenever possible, and apply them sparingly when there is no choice.
4. Creative design hurts usability
Sometimes thoughtful design can have a negative impact on user experience. What makes this mistake even more dangerous is that we designers love thoughtful design. These are tiny graphic wonders that bring smiles to our faces. Even sadder is that not all smart designs are good, especially when they create problems with accessibility, discovery, or usability.
A well-thought-out design should be as reliable as possible or tested on real users. Sometimes thoughtful design can backfire and hurt usability.
5. Excessive animation
Animation is a key element of interaction design, but it should always serve a purpose. They should never be made for animation. Unfortunately, designers tend to have a soft spot for animation, in part because creating animation is so much fun that we may not know when to stop.
This problem becomes dangerous when designer lacks animation. However, when we animate purposefully, effect can be good.
To sum up above five design failures, both freelance designers and website building companies need to be vigilant.
