This website requires energy consumption and carbon footprint to open. The power consumption when opening website A and when opening website B is different. In other words, carbon emissions of websites are different.
Can website design be studied in terms of reducing carbon emissions?
Many might think this is "minor" because carbon footprint of opening a web page is negligible compared to carbon footprint of industrial sector. Therefore, there is no need to consider carbon footprint of a website.
However, a survey conducted by an overseas web design forum shows that a third of designers are willing to make design changes to reduce carbon footprint of a website.
You can see that website design needs to be looked at from a carbon footprint.
Carbon emissions
In this article, we want to discuss following questions: what changes can designers make to reduce carbon footprint of a website?
Change 1: Dark Mode
We know that most mobile browsers have a dark mode. And when we put mobile into "power saving mode", screen also becomes black and dark. Therefore, dark backgrounds, themes, and images are more energy efficient than bright colors. So adding a dark mode to a website can reduce your carbon footprint. There are roughly three ways to add a dark mode:
First, add a script tag to body and import js file.
Second, add or remove css files in dark mode according to frontend switcher to achieve wrap style effect.
Third, use a dark mode CSS selector (like .dark) to set up a dark theme, and then add or remove selectors for all labels according to frontend switcher.
Change 2: Restrict JavaScript
JavaScript can create dynamic images, buttons, and more. However, JavaScript is also resource intensive and tends to increase load time of web pages.
Therefore, if you want to reduce power consumption when opening web pages, you need to limit use of resource-hungry JavaScript and limit site's payload.
And this approach can improve user experience, so why not do it?
Change third: shorten access path
There is no doubt that when a user visits a site, more pages they open, more power consumption will be; longer user stays, greater power consumption and carbon footprint.
So, how to shorten user access path is a problem that requires constant optimization.
For example, web designers need to decide whether to allow users to get definitive information through "direct search" or "navigation". In another example, a strong or weak internal link correlation is also associated with user's access path.
So if it's a website with more content, it should have a "search box", and if it's a website with less content, it should have scientific navigation and internal linking. All of this helps reduce website's carbon footprint.
Similarly, such an optimized design can also improve user experience.
We have found that when looking at website design from a carbon footprint, on one hand we can reduce website's carbon footprint, and on other hand, most changes can also improve user experience .
Summing up, we think it's worth a tryü change design ideas and methods in terms of reducing "carbon emissions".
